  • Q: Can my opponent use the “Shield Blast” ability of that shield?
    • A: Yes. Even though the shield wasn’t broken as part of an attack, it was broken.
  • Q: Spellbane Dragon has “Double Breaker.” Does that mean “Backfire” really breaks 2 shields?
    • A: No. Any “Breaker” ability applies only when the creature is attacking the opponent and isn’t blocked.
  • Q: If my opponent casts a spell that puts a card into his shield zone as a new shield, can “Backfire” cause Spellbane Dragon to break that shield?
    • A: Yes. You use “Backfire” just after that spell resolves, so if your opponent casts a spell to add a new shield, Spellbane Dragon will be able to break it.
  • Q: Say my Spellbane Dragon attacks and breaks a shield that has “Shield Blast” (like Terror Pit). My opponent casts that spell to banish my Spellbane Dragon. Will the “Backfire” ability trigger?
    • A: Yes. Spellbane Dragon is in the battle zone when your opponent casts that spell, so “Backfire” will trigger. However, Spellbane Dragon will actually be in your discard pile when “Backfire” causes it to break a shield.
  • Q: Okay, but say “Backfire” breaks a shield that has “Shield Blast” while Spellbane Dragon is in my discard pile, and my opponent casts that spell. Will “Backfire” trigger in that case?
    • A: No. “Backfire” won’t trigger again because Spellbane Dragon is in your discard pile when that spell is cast. A creature’s ability will only trigger when the creature is in the battle zone unless the ability specifically says otherwise.
